MoviesGod cares about what we put into our heads. What we watch influences us (no matter how slight it may seem), and when we feed ourselves garbage we are likely to pick some of it up.
The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. -Luke 6:45 The following websites can help you make informed decisions about the movies you consider watching. (How many times have you watched a movie which looked good just to find that it was filled with unappreciated profanity, inappropriate humor, sensuality, graphic violence, etc. Although most movies are effected by these unfortunate realities, it is possible to know which movies will and which won't fill your mind with the very things that you are trying to avoid.)
It's extremely important to come up with your own personal criteria which you believe God wants you to base your entertainment selections on. These websites are tools, they aren't meant to be replacements for your own moral judgment. You should use the facts they provide to come to your own conclusion. Just because the website gives a movie a good review doesn't mean that the movie will meet your personal criteria of being beneficial for you to watch. It's absolutely ok to disagree with their recommendations.
"Everything is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial."Everything is permissible"--but not everything is constructive. -1 Corinthians 10:23 (see also 1 Cor. 6:12) (Please Note: I have to admit that I sometimes have too high of tastes when it comes to movies because I have become more sensitive to writing, acting, and production quality. So if I sound like I'm being a critic at any point it's probably because I am.) |
Reason to Watch: I love VeggieTales! You really can't put an age range on it. They are great for the whole family :) Each episode/movie is entertaining but also teaches necessary lessons and gives opportunities to teach and discuss it. They are fantastic!
Done Well: Good quality (however, I liked the old animation much better). Cautions: They are partially intended to make you laugh but everyone has different standards when it comes to jokes. (Even though I think they are good you might disagree.) Plus, they do a lot of parodies based on secular shows or trends (which are clean but I know that still bothers some people). They definitely strive to be kid friendly and entertaining for kids and adults at the same time. If you are interested in their work you should get their videos from your local library!
(I highly recommend buying the ones you really enjoy from the VeggieTales website.)p.s. I would recommend you watch several of the older ones (approx. before 2010, and I want to mention that the really old ones are very good too) before watching the newer ones because the older ones are usually better (there is a lot of variety of style in all of the episodes). |
Time ChangerReason to Watch: This movie has an important theme: confronting the moral decline of our culture (from a Christian perspective).
Done Well: I will admit that this is not the cream of the crop if you are accustomed to quality top of the market movies, but it is one of my favorites because of its message. It's probably about a 3 on a scale of 1-5 for acting, production, and story quality. Cautions: It does have a few alluded to elements (inappropriately clothed mannequins and unmarried people on tv almost kiss) that parents may be sensitive to, especially before letting children watch, although they are handled with caution. |
Amazing Love: The Story of HoseaReason to Watch: This movie is quite good! The story of Hosea is a huge testimony about God's love for us.
Done Well: The the reenactment of Hosea's story was really good, but the camping part of the movie could have been written more interestingly. Cautions: It does have the story of Hosea from the Bible in it so it does have one element that parents may want to be discerning about before letting children watch, but that aspect was mostly just implied. |
